Any one of these parts can become very complex indeed. A phrase such as the black cat can be made even bigger, by adding extra words to it:

the black cat

the big black cat

the three big black cats

the three big black cats with long tails.

You and I can say this sort of thing. Children have to learn to do so. They begin this task in their third year.

However, when children start to fill out their sentence parts in this way, you’ll find that they don’t do the whole job at once. Some parts get filled out before others. Here’s a basic sentence:
